This is the first of two volumes which bring together a selection of the best, most influential and commonly cited essays and articles in Australian history and place them in a framework of critical commentary. Much research and writing in Australian history between 1974 and 1994 has occurred in separate specializations. Interesting debates have taken place in isolation. This work integrates the major debates within a common framework and opens up an array of scholarship to students and the general public seeking a generalist account of Australian history.
PENNY RUSSELL is the author of A Wish of Distinction: Colonial Gentility and Femininity and is currently working on female culture in Australia. RICHARD WHITE is the author of Inventing Australia: Images and Identity 1688-1980 and articles on nationalism, popular culture, travel and war. They both lecture in history at the University of Sydney, where together they have taught popular courses on nineteenth and twentieth century Australia.
