Description

The Welcome of Strangers by Professor Atholl Anderson (Ngi Tahu) is a deep exploration of the distinct lifestyles and histories of the southern Mori communities of New Zealand, chronicling their unique traditions, their interactions with European settlers and the evolving dynamics between land, sea and people. Published in partnership with the Ngi Tahu archives team, this is a major new edition of a signifi cant and widely referenced history.

Drawing from tribal knowledge, early written accounts and recent scholarship, the author provides details of the origins and migrations of the Waitaha and Kti Mmoe peoples and the arrival and establishment ofNgi Tahu. The narrative centres on mahinga kai, showcasing how these communities skilfully used resources from the land and sea. As European influences grew stronger with the influx of whalers, sealers and missionaries, these Mori communities underwent shifts, adapting to and resisting the new forces. The book explains these dynamics, painting a vivid portrayal of Mori resilience and evolution.

With new illustrations, maps and colourful biographies of key figures, The Welcome of Strangers is an enriching narrative of southern Mori traditions and peoples.
