Description

This book is one of a series which aims to meet the growing need amongst students and teachers of medieval history for translations of key sources that are directly usable in students' own work. The series provides texts which are central to medieval studies courses and focus upon the diverse culture, social and political conditions that affected the functioning of all levels of medieval society. Each volume includes a guide to the sources' interpretation, including a discussion of critical linguistic problems and an assessment of recent research on the topics covered. This volume presents the story of the years 1397-1400. The author provides contemporary material to show the chronology of events immediatley preceding and following the revolution of 1399 and the downfall of Richard II. The texts have, for the most part, been translated by the author, but the chronicle of Adam Usk and the "Traison et Mort" were translated by E.M. Thompson and Benjamin Williams respectively. The translation of "Metrical History" is based on that made by J. Webb in 1823, but substantially modernized with reference to the original French text.
