Medieval conduct texts provided behavioral guidelines for men, women and children on a wide range of issues, including food, fashion and general behaviour. These nine papers, resulting from sessions of the International Congress on Medieval Studies held at Western Michigan University between 1992 and 1995, focus on the role of gender and social status in the interpretation of these texts. Didactic and literary texts are examined including Courtesy books aimed at gentlemen, Christine de Pizan's works, Middle High German advice poems, educational treatises, trial records, devotional texts and dramatic works.
