Considering the current scholarly interest in Fascist Italy, this specialized tool is both timely and welcome. ... Contributors include such distinguished experts as Renzo De Felice and Charles Delzell. All aspects of Italian life as they relate to fascism, principally from 1922 to 1945, are captured. The biographical entries on lesser known figures are particularly useful. The signed articles, representing a variety of viewpoints, are arranged alphabetically with bibliographical citations and cross-references. A chronology and lengthy lists of political and military officials are among this work's special features. Recommended for large academic library collections.-Library Journal
The most comprehensive reference work on Italian fascism and a most welcome one. Cannistraro, the editor, has been aided by experts from a variety of historiographical schools and other disciplines. The range of personalities, events, organizations, and many other topics covered is vast; each entry ends with an updated bibliography; and the writing is effective and clear throughout. Moreover, the volume provides both maps of the Italian colonial empire and maps detailing the spread of fascism, 1921-22. There are valuable appendixes on important events; and a number of useful lists name all organizations, agencies, and parties; original fascists in 1919; ministers and undersecretaries, 1922-45; the party secretaries, military commanders, and colonial governors; the membership of the Fascist Grand Council for July 1943. Finally, there is a schedule of altered Italian place-names. Such a unique reference volume is recommended for all college and university libraries and for large public libraries.-Choice
