Reviews

Echard's dictionary is an exciting contribution to the knowledge of historical and cultural events of the Second Empire. The well-written entries range in length from a third of a page to six pages or more, citing French and English bibliographic sources. These are followed by a list of related entries, providing additional information on complex topics. In addition to an excellent index, the work has a very useful subject chronology. One of a five-volume series on French history, from the Revolution to the Third Republic, the dictionary is the only work of its kind to concentrate on the totality of events during the Second Empire. Erchard has produced a valuable work. * Choice *
Researchers of topics relating to the French Second Empire should be delighted with the depth and breadth of this historical dictionary. Approximately 350 entries deal in topics and personalities in the arts, warfare and politics, law, religion, economic developments, and other major cultural areas . Nearly all articles are signed and include a bibliography and cross-references. The reader will find in-depth coverage of the lives of a variety of personalities active during the period--artists, politicians, etc.--as well as descriptive accounts of activities in key cities, towns, and other geographic areas. A sixty-six page chronology and index further enhance its usefulness. This highly readable dictionary is strongly recommended for all libraries supporting research on French history. * Reference Book Review *
