Description

This book presents the views of a number of distinguished German military historians on the problems of civil-military relations in Germany and France in the period from the Franco-Prussian War to the French occupation of Germany after 1945. It compares the origins, recruitment and political attitudes of the respective countries' officer corps and considers the impact of defeat on both of them - in the French case after 1940, and in the German case after 1918. The authors discuss the role of the French and German navies in politics and the impact of the military on foreign policy in both nations during the period between the two world wars.

Reviews

"This volume, bringing together the work of leading German military historians, is a valuable overview which will be of interest not only to readers interested in military history. It raises important general issues and should stimulate further research, particularly on the question of the German Sonderweg, where a study of military history can shed much light..." Manfried Zeidler, Technische Universitaet Dresden "This book will be of great interest to students of political and social sciences; and military history..." USI Journal "this book has much useful information to impart. [... Some of the pieces, notably those by Messerchmidt and Muller, should be on every undergraduate introductory reading list as first-class summaries of the state of research in their respective fields." History 'The kind of comparative history of which you could only wish to see a great more.' Francia
