Description

Known as the 'Fighting Cocks', No 43 Sqn has been a part of the RAF since 1916, and is still in service today. This volume deals exclusively with the unit's exploits during WW2, covering its service during the evacuation of Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain, as well as the years spent supporting the Allied cause in North Africa and the Mediterranean. Flying Hurricanes from November 1939, and re-equipped with Spitfires in early 1943, 'Fighting Cocks' pilots scored 159 kills during the war and over a dozen of them 'made ace'. This book presents a full picture of the squadron, its men and its aircraft.

Author Bio

Andy Saunders is the founder of the Tangmere Battle of Britain Museum. He has contributed to over two dozen aviation-related titles over the past 20 years. His specialist area is the history of RAF Tangmere, in Sussex, where No 43 Sqn was based for many years both before and during World War 2. An airbrush artist with years of experience, Chris has become Osprey's principal illustrator of RAF aircraft, having produced the profiles for over a dozen books since 1994. His most recent work includes Aircraft of the Aces 27: Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2 and Combat Aircraft 14: Halifax Squadrons of World War 2. He is particularly adept at 'big' aircraft like the Halifax and Sunderland.
