Spanning 16 years of destruction and rebirth, this chronology deals with the tumultuous years between the Nazi seizure of power on January 30, 1933 and the proclamation of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948. Coverage ranges from Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe and the major theatres of war, to the home fronts of all the major and minor combatants. In addition to the chronology, the volume contains an introductory essay and postcript to help place events in their historical context.
A World in Turmoil: An Integrated Chronology of the Holocaust and World War II is a day-by-day list of the events that occurred during 1933-8. An introductory essay sets the stage with a description of the political and economic events that resulted in Hitler's rise to power. This is followed by lists that show what was happening on any given day during this period. Events are placed within the political and social framework of the time so that one can see historical relationships and understand the context. A glossary, bibliography, and name, place, and subject indexes facilitate the use of this source. This chronology is more detailed and covers a larger time span than that in the appendix to The Enclyclopedia of the Holocaust. Smaller libraries that cannot afford The Enclyclopedia of the Holocaust will find A World in Turmoil helpful for providing historical perspective. Larger collections and special libraries will want it as a supplementary tool.-Reference Books Bulletin
