The prism of America--its diversity of peoples, its myriad points of view--is examined over 18 traditional historical periods in this compendium of quotations. American thought is followed with focus on the luminaries from the pre-Columbus explorers to George W. Bush, and by encompassing and juxtaposing the words of politicians and generals, Native Americans, ethnic minorities, women, labor representatives, and slaves. Their words are woven into American history, remembered and illuminated in this kaleidoscopic collection. Broken into 18 traditional historical periods, the book traces American thought from pre-Columbus explorers to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Included are quotations from more than 350 individuals, taken from a variety of sources--speeches, interviews, editorials, letters, jokes, songs, and eyewitness accounts. Represented are the famous and the forgotten, members of high society and the dirt poor, straight and gay, politicians and generals, farmers and lawyers, warriors and clergymen. The book includes slavery as well as freedom, the exploitation of Native Americans, and the roles of women. All were part of the fabric of America. All are caught in this kaleidoscopic view.
