Description

Spanning the history of the American West from the earliest human communities to the close of the 20th century, this volume includes well-known historical events, as well as critical points in the social and cultural history of the region, such as the Exoduster migration to Kansas and the debut of Walt Disney's theme park in Anaheim, California. It also examines the multiracial and multiethnic character of the region from a variety of perspectives, times and places. The chronology unfolds in four parts: the Native West (c. 30,000 B.C.E.-1500 C.E.), the imperial West (1500-1840), the incorported West (1841-1932) and the contested West (1932-2001). Each section opens with an overview of the major events and historical trends of the period, locating them in the larger scope of the history of the region and the nation. Sidebars offer biographical portraits of important figures and extend analysis of important events.
