Description

In a few short years at the beginning of the 1820's, Nashua NH went from an agrarian community of small farms to a booming, industrial city thanks in large part to the textile industry. Large factories were built along Nashua's rivers where they could access water power. This brought people to work the mills, and business to support the people. There was a growing need for fire protection and suppression and so the first fire apparatus, a hand tub, was purchased by one of the mills in 1824, called the T.W. Gillis. From there a second and third hand pumper was secured and by 1837, Nashua had it's own fire department. This book covers the evolution of the department from hand drawn carts to steamers to the first mechanized apparatus to giant diesel pumpers capable of pumping 1250 gallons per minute or more. Saving lives, saving property and protecting Nashua's residents - that's Nashua's Bravest.

Author Bio

A Nashua native, Gary Ledoux grew up in Nashua's Crown Hill area. He applied to the Nashua Fire Department in 1973 but did not meet the physical height requirement. Moving to nearby Amherst, NH, he became a volunteer for the Amherst Fire Dept; where he served for five years. Ledoux's full-time interest was the automotive industry where he enjoyed a successful 48-year career which took him first to Florida and then to southern California. He was employed for 29 years with American Honda; most of that time at their national office in Los Angeles. He began writing professionally in 1994 producing scores of feature articles and column pieces of both automotive business and old-west history for several different magazines. He has published five books, one covering automotive history and four covering old-west history. Ledoux retired in October 2017 and moved back to Florida where he lives with his wife, Rachel, and four dogs. He and his wife enjoy traveling in their Winnebago motor home.
