Description

Using diaries she kept as a teenager, Janina Bauman describes the horror of the siege and surrender of Warsaw in 1939. Along with a curfew came raids, beatings and enforced moves into what the Nazis designated as the Jewish ghetto. Relatives and friends disappeared and food became scarce. Forever on the move to avoid deportation to the camps, escape to the "Aryan" side was followed by years of hiding, terror and finally hope.

Reviews

'A magnificent testimony to the people of the ghetto ... a profound autobiographical meditation' - New Society 'A deeply moving but surprisingly unselfpitying book, a real pleasure to read' - TES 'Absorbing...Testaments such as Janina Bauman's are important and should never be allowed to fade away' - Margaret Forster 'A profound and moving book which everyone ought to read' - Alan Sillitoe, New Statesman
