Kaufmann is the author of five books on fortifications: Hitler's Blitzkrieg Campa igns (Combined, 1993), Sleeping Giant: US Armed Fo rces Between World Wars (Greenwood, 1996), Maginot Imitations (Greenwood, 1997) , The Maginot Line ( Greenwood, 1997) and Medieval Fortress (Combined 2 001). He is an acknowledged expert on the topic an d has appeared on the History Channel discussing f ortifications. He is a retired U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officer and school teacher. He lives in San Antonio.
