Description

The first Zeppelin attack on London came in May 1915 and with it came the birth of a new arena of warfare, the home front. German airships attempted to raid London on 26 separate occasions between May 1915 and October 1917. This book tells the story of Germanys strategic Zeppelin offensive against Britain, and how it came to be neutralized.

Reviews

"The book is a fascinating read into the initial hopes and expectations, the campaign itself and the results of that campaign. A book I am sure you will enjoy as much as did I and one that I can highly recommend to you." --Scott Van Aken, Modeling Madness (September 2008)

"Ian Castle's London 1914-17: The Zeppelin Menace reveals the Zeppelin raids on London which fostered a new kind of warfare and German successes." --California Bookwatch (May 2008)

"All of the raids are described here in considerable details, with their results on the ground and the losses inflicted upon them. Individual maps show the course of each airship that reached London, and where its bombs hit, and there are many contemporary photographs as well as good colour plates." --John Prigent, Internet Modeler (April 2008)

Author Bio

Ian Castle has lived in London all his life, and in this, his latest book for Osprey, he combines his passion for military history with a fascination for the history of the city. His previous books have focused on his other great interests: the Napoleonic Wars and Britains 19th-century wars in South Africa, but this is the first exploring his interests in the early aviation pioneers. Christa Hook began her illustrating career in 1986. Her work has featured extensively in the worlds of publishing and television, and she has established herself as one of Osprey's most popular illustrators. Her illustrations combine the historian's attention to detail with the artist's sense of drama and atmosphere, and they are sought after by collectors worldwide. She has had work selected for the Laing Land and Seascape Exhibition 2000 at the Mall, and the Not the Royal Academy Exhibition 2000 at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery.
