.,." thorough, well-organized bibliography of writings by and about King.... Embracing publications from 1955 to 1984, totaling 1,277 numbered items, many of them briefly annotated, this title provides an excellent source for anyone interested in this Nobel Peace Prize winner. Citations are arranged under nine categories: works by King (chronological); biographical materials; Soutehrn Christian Leadership Conference; marches and demonstrations; major awards; FBI and government operations; philosophy; assassination; and the comemorations and eulogies. With the exception of the first chapter, each chapter is subdivided into sections listing books, articles, government publications, and sometimes dissertations. Name, subject, and title indexes are appended.... The historical importance of King as well as the careful compilations of this book recommends this bibliography to academic, public, and high school libraries."-Reference Books Bulletin
.,."This will be extraordinarily useful to the many high school and college students who choose to study some aspect of this extraordinary man's exemplary life."-Wilson Library Bulletin

[The book] updates and enlarges William H. Fisher's 1977 bibliography of King. Of particular importance in Pyatt's work is the inclusion of declassified FBI documents on King from 1962 until his death. The volume has 1,277 items (books, articles, government documents, dissertations, and theses). The initial section of the volume gives a year by year (1955 through 1984) listing of printed editions of King's books and articles. This comprises a total of 189 items; the rest of the book is concerned with publications about King arranged under a number of separate headings (e.g., his life in general; his work with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the marches and demonstrations led by him, government operations centered on King....). With very few exceptions, all items are annotated by Pyatt; the annotations are brief (two or three lines) and give the main substance/thrust of the item being considered. Three indexes (Names; Subjects; Titles) conclude the work which now stands as the most complete available bibliography of Martin Luther King, Jr.-Association for the Development of Religious Information Services
Interest in the great civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to grow.... This bibliography is therefore welcome as an update to William H. Fisher's Free at Last: A Bibliography of Martin Luther King, Jr. It provides both broader coverage of biographical sources and extensive references to remarks in the Congressional Record. Sherman E. Pyatt includes in each of his nine chapters numerous citations to declassified FBI documents on King, as well as to books, articles, and dissertations. All citations are briefly annotated.... This bibliography is a valuable resource for students of religious and political history of American blacks. Because of its arrangement and indexes by name, subject, and title (for King's writings), it is easy to use. The wide range of periodicals (American Libraries, Beijing Review) brings less-known sources to light and increases the book's usefulness. For all levels of readers.-Choice
