His passion for flight, especially military aviation, began in his youth after reading Captain Ted Lawson's classic Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. After earning a degree in history, Dan dedicated many fulfilling years to volunteering and working in museums focused on history, aviation, and aerospace. Over the course of his career, he cared for a wide range of artifacts, from dinosaur fossils to relics of the Hindenburg, as well as Apollo-era spacecraft, before retiring in 2021.
