Recent studies report that Japanese is the second most productive source of new loanwords to English. Such studies indicate that English-speaking countries are paying more attention to Japan than ever before. This dictionary lists and defines hundreds of terms borrowed from Japanese that are now used in English-language publications. These quotations were collected from books, newspapers, magazines, novels, texts, advertisements, and databases published or distributed in the United States between 1964 and 1995. TOSHIE M. EVANS is a reporter for Gekkan Nihon-go, a journal published in Japan for teachers of Japanese as a second language. She is the author of Ei-go ni natta Nihon-go (Japanese words adopted into English, 1990). She taught Japanese at Rio Salado Community College in Phoenix, Arizona. Her numerous articles on language and language education have appeared in a language textbook and Japanese journals such as Ei-go Kyoiku, Gekkan Nihon-go, Gendai Ei-go Kyoiku, Gengo Seikatsu, and NHK Television: Yasashii Ei-Kaiwa.
