This is a collection of passages from Latin authors for students beginning real (unadapted) Latin translation, designed for post-GCSE use in schools, to A-level standard and beyond. The passages, unabridged but not otherwise adapted, are arranged according to difficulty, and the authors chosen are all regularly set in examination. It includes structured vocabulary lists which will be especially helpful in individual private study. The Latin texts are sometimes abridged to provide coherent narrative within their scope, but are not otherwise adapted. All are provided with introductions and a glossary of problematic words and idioms, and structured vocabulary lists should enable the student to study on their own.
Roy Hyde is Head of Classics, University College School, London, UK and Chief Examiner, Oxford and Cambridge Examinations and Assessment Council.
