Environmental Impact Assessment sets out the legal requirements relating to EIAs including the relationship of European Union law with domestic law and the resulting cases. The book concentrates on the role that EIAs play in the planning application process. It includes sections on EIAs in specific contexts (such as forestry, archaeology, agriculture and highways); and a section on good practice that offers guidance on scoping the statement, how to write the non-technical summary and certain aspects such as social impact, air quality, noise and health risk assessments.
The third edition has been fully updated to include:
- Analysis and explanation of the implications of Brexit and the continuing role of EU law
- Key decisions of the higher courts, notably the 2024 decision of the Supreme Court in Finch on assessing Scope 3 emissions
- Expanded coverage of EIA in the context of development consent orders for nationally significant infrastructure
- Developments in appropriate assessment of projects having effects on designated habitat sites
