Description

Norwegian knitwear designers Heidi Eikeland and Mette Hovden have collaborated to present a thorough, step-by-step introduction to entrelac knitting; a technique in which the fabric is formed by knitting textured, diamond-shaped blocks. It creates an almost woven appearance unlike any other - and now its easier than ever to master! With a selection of eye-catching, contemporary garments for men, women and children, including gorgeously-patterned multicolour designs and elegant single-colour designs, there is a 'comprehensive techniques' section to get you started.

You can work an entrelac design as a stunning embellishment across a sweater yoke or around the cuff of a mitten, or turn an entire garment into a dazzling work of art!

Reviews

Another pattern book concentrating on a single technique from two Norwegian designer sisters. Mette and Heidi have written their book 'because the interest in entrelac has grown enormously, because there are few patterns for it [and] because it is and old technique on the way to being forgotten.'

Entrelac blocks are geometric shapes with a set height and width and 'the Norwegian variation is special because the ride side is always facing the knitter.' The principles of the technique are clearly laid out.

The patterns start with a headband and hat, scarf, wrist warmer set designed for beginners, and are then organised into various categories covering accessories, knits for children, women and men, and finally furnishings with pillow covers and a throw. Each pattern has been assigned a skill rating with written instructions and a few schematics covering either different garment sizes, special shaping or direction of working. Some of the patterns show the effect of using entrelac for the complete item, others use it as a design feature or embellishment.

This book is well written, clearly laid out with good photographs; the accessories and garments are well chose and colourful. It provides 'a thorough, step-by-step instruction to the technique.'
