A collection of Terry Wogan's best TELEGRAPH columns, with his trademark wry take on life.
'It's my feeling that whatever's bothering you, you ought to be able to say it in less than 500 words. The rest is window-dressing ... Probably explains why I didn't write WAR AND PEACE...'Sir Terry Wogan has been busy over the past 10 years writing his ever-popular SUNDAY TELEGRAPH column. In this first collection of the very best of his weekly musings, Terry delivers his distinctively dry and amusing views on life. From the disappointment of the declining years, the ubiquity of TV cooks ('Nowadays, you can't throw a stone in a country road without hitting a television chef, in full colour'), to vanity and those little daily annoyances that drive you to drink, he never fails to entertain. Terry's modern grumbles, gentle social commentary and witty observations make for a delightful assortment of reading.Charming and wry, with not a hint of lickspittle, this is WOGAN'S WORLD at its most entertaining.Terry's blend of homespun wisdom and irreverence is a necessary tonic to our frenetic, celebrity-fixated culture, and this timeless tome contains the pick of his 'pithy pars'. * Choice *
Full of characteristic bonhomie, it's an uplifting and philosophical read, perfect for dipping into at leisure. * GOOD BOOK GUIDE *
Terry Wogan was born in Limerick and educated at Crescent College. After leaving college Terry went into banking, and five years later joined Radio Telefis Eirann as a newsreader/announcer. Moving to light entertainment as a disc jockey and host of TV quiz and variety shows, in 1969 Terry stood in for BBC Radio's Jimmy Young and later that year was given his own daily shows on BBC Radio 1 and 2. In 1972 he took over the prestigious morning show slot and it's been downhill since then. Terry's extensive television credits include his live chat show series WOGAN, SONGS FOR EUROPE, THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST, COME DANCING and BLANKETY BLANK, to name but a few. In 1993 Terry rejoined BBC Radio 2 to present WAKE UP TO WOGAN the most listened to breakfast show in the UK. In a moment of weakness Her Majesty the Queen honoured him with a knighthood in 2005. He was married to the sainted Lady Helen, the present Mrs Wogan, and has two sons and a daughter.
