He has fifteen previous books to his credit, all highly illustrated histories, including the Historical Atlas of the North American Railroad (University of California Press, 2010). He is the only two-time winner of the British Columbia Lieutenant-Governors Medal for Historical Writing. As well as a distinguished writer Derek is a professional photographer and an award-winning book designer.
