Bob Brown was appointed director of the Tasmanian Wilderness Society in 1978 and led the campaign to prevent the construction of the Franklin Dam. In 1983 he became a member of Tasmanias parliament and in 1992 he became a founding member of the Australian Greens. In 1996 he was elected to the Australian Senate and in following years he led the Australian Greens. He resigned from the Senate in 2012. His bestselling autobiographical book Optimism was published in 2014. Bob Brown lives in Tasmania with his partner Paul, and continuesto remain at the forefront of the movement to protect Australia's natural environment through the Bob Brown Foundation.
