Description

This is one of two companion volumes which represent a guide to the major sites of African-American history throughout the United States. It includes descriptions and detailed information for visitors in respect of hundreds of places of national and local significance in the south of the country, from churches and schools to battlefields and cemeteries, and from stops on the underground railroad to landmarks of the 1950s civil-rights movement. A straightforward coded heading for each entry provides the site's address, travel directions, visiting hours and fees. Symbols call attention to particular categories of sites, such as those of interest to children, and those of major importance. Descriptions of the sites are accompanied by anecdotes about people - famous and otherwise - whose own stories are tied to the places in question.

"A unique guide to major landmarks in African American history for travelers, adventurers and scholars.
