China expert Damian Harper covers all the main towns and cities of China, helping travelers negotiate what is probably the fastest changing country on Earth. Travel information and tips for the hot spots of Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are all extensively updated for this latest edition. The developing Yangtze region and remote areas such as Inner Mongolia and the Silk Road are also extensively covered, including detailed city walks, bike rides, and river cruises, complete with maps and booking information.
The National Geographic Traveler guidebooks are in tune with the ever growing trend toward experiential travel, providing inspiring photography, insider tips, and expert advice for a more authentic, enriching experience of the destination. The guides provide information, historical context, and cultural interpretation not available online.
Educated at Winchester College and with an art history degree and six years of bookselling under his belt, DAMIAN HARPER pursued an interest in Chinese martial arts at London's School of Oriental and African Studies, graduating in 1995 with a degree in modern and classical Chinese. The four-year course took him to Beijing for a year where he met his Chinese wife, Dai Min. Harper has lived and worked in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, traveled extensively throughout China, and co-authored several guides on China, Beijing, and the Hong Kong region. He frequently returns to China with his wife, son, and daughter.
