Author Bio

Julian Tompkin grew up in the remote Eastern Goldfields of Western Australia on the fringes of the Great Victoria Desert: a kaleidoscopic landscape of saltpans and spinifex. He has been exploring the far-flung reaches of his home state ever since both physically and through his regular cultural articles and essays published nationally and worldwide. A former newspaper editor, he has also held senior positions in the music industry, curated major cultural events and was appointed Researcher in Residence at the State Library of Western Australia, where he continued his innate passion for WA history and stories. A decade-long stint in Europe predominately in Paris and Berlin would lead to the international publication of his book Wanderlust in Berlin with Hardie Grant Explore in 2020. Tompkin, his German wife and two children now call the historic port city of Walyalup (Fremantle) home, where he divides his time between travel and his creative and critical pursuits.
