The Genus Lavandula is the most comprehensive and authoritative account of lavender to be published to date, focusing on their worldwide importance as garden plants and a mainstay of the perfumery and aromatherapy industries. Describing some 39 species, their hybrids and nearly 400 cultivars, it brings together taxonomy, distribution, history and cultivation with additional chapters on propagation, pests and diseases, and an overview of their commercial products, essential oils and chemistry. Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout, including 31 full page colour paintings and 45 line drawings by the renowned botanical artists Georita Harriott, Christabel King and Joanna Langhorne. Close-up colour photographs, taxonomic keys and distribution maps ease identification, and the authors' unique position and expertise equip them perfectly to bring together the latest research. This makes The Genus Lavandula a unique reference for all - botanists, perfumers, aromatherapists, growers and gardeners - to this, the most loved aromatic plant.
Dr Tim Upson, Superintendent of the University of Cambridge's 40 acre Botanic Garden, trained as a horticulturalist at Kew, and went on to undertake a doctorate on lavender at the University of Reading. He has published many papers and popular articles on lavenders, and is widely recognised as a leading authority who combines academic acumen with practical expertise and skill. Susyn Andrews, recently of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, is a world-leading horticultural taxonomist and co-founder and Chairman of the Horticultural Taxonomy Group (HORTAX). She has published over 150 scientific papers and articles, was the senior editor of Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants (1999), is an Honorary Research Associate at Kew, and serves on several scientific and horticultural committees. An enthusiastic gardener, her passion for lavenders stretches back 15 years.
