Description

Penguins are, perhaps, the most loved of birds. We'vebeen fascinated by them for just about as long as we'veknown they existed. When penguins are on land, theiractions appear to us so humorous and expressive thatwe can be excused for thinking we understand themperfectly, identifying with what looks like moods andfoibles similar to our own. Little do we realise thattheir private life is as complex and mysterious as thatof any wild animal or that the bulk of their existence in terms of time, space and survival skills takesplace very far from our prying eyes, hidden beneath theocean waves.

While a few types of penguins are relatively wellknown thanks to zoos, books, films and select traveldestinations not everyone realises the family isrepresented by 18 species (or even 19, depending onthe taxonomy used). Those with retiring personalitiesor nocturnal habits tend to remain overlooked andrarely photographed.
