Research on house dust mites has grown enormously since 1964 when they were first identified as producers of allergens capable of mediating bronchial hyper-reactivity and localised allergic skin reactions. The study of the mites and the allergies they cause is now a multidisciplinary field drawing on the skills of biochemists, clinical immunologists, medical entomologists and acarologists, architects and hygienists. The purpose of this book is to provide a reference work for all those with an involvement or interest in dust mite research, incorporating in a single volume the major topics of systematics, physiology, ecology, allergen biochemistry and mite control and avoidance.
