Sports-related injuries have become a public health epidemic. Twelve million student athletes will suffer a sports-related injury this year. Nearly two million injuries will be in recreational softball games and baseball games. The majority of these injuries are preventable. The Awakening of a Surgeon outlines 20 strategies that can be implemented in every community to drastically reduce the possibility of injury and death.
David H. Janda, M.D graduated from Bucknell University, earned his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Michigan, and then completed a fellowship in shoulder reconstructive surgery and sports medicine in London, Ontario, Canada. He is a practicing orthopedic surgeon and shoulder specialist at the Michigan Orthopedic Center, and is also the Director and founder of The Institute for Preventative Sports Medicine, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In addition to being a surgeon, Dr. Janda has distinguished himself in the research arena, producing work that has helped to prevent injuries and create savings in health care costs for millions of individuals across the United States. In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Janda was appointed by the former Bush Administration to the Board of the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. He also was appointed to the National Institute of Health Trauma Research Task Force. With his book, The Awakening of a Surgeon, Dr. Janda was a featured guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show and his research and prevention based studies have been featured on many network television, radio, newspaper and magazine presentations, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS, This Morning, Fox Network News, HBO, and CNN.
