Description

On October 11, 2018, Encounter Books celebrated its twentieth anniversary at an evening gala honoring Rebekah Mercer and Sir Roger Scruton at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C. Rebekah Mercer, who was introduced by the historian Victor Davis Hanson, was the recipient of the inaugural Encounter Prize for Advancing American Ideals, which honors an individual who fosters the intellectual and moral resources that nurture ordered liberty and the pursuit of truth in American cultural and political life. What follows is adapted from the remarks delivered that night.

Author Bio

Rebekah Mercer is the director of the Mercer Family Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization founded in 2004. She is the founder and chairman of Reclaim New York, a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing a state-wide, grassroots conversation about the future of New York, its economy, and its people. She serves on the boards of a number of other non-profits, including the Media Research Center, the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, the Moving Picture Institute, and the American Museum of Natural History. With her sisters, she owns and runs Ruby et Violette, an online gourmet ice cream and chocolate chunk cookie company.

Victor Davis Hanson is a senior fellow in Classics and Military History at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and the author of 17 books on ancient, military, and social history.
