The essays in this book explore the literary, rhetorical and folkloristic resources for understanding the individual aphorism (short saying) in its literary and social context. The papers presented here were given in panel at the Society for Biblical Literature Meeting in November 2001. These essays explore such issues as the role of metaphor and sound-play, the function of "disjointed" parallelism, the role of aphorism in performance, and the notion of a "canon" of proverbs and how proverbs can move in and out of this canon. They also include a survey of the study of the aphorism in the last fifty years.
