Claude B. Levenson's authoritative biography of the Dalai Lama takes the reader one step closer to understanding the long and challenging path that the Tibetan spiritual leader has travelled since his birth in 1935. It follows the Dalai Lama's life through the Chinese occupation of Tibet, up to his exile and ensuring flight over the Himalayas to India, and describes his development, education, and philosophy.
"Claude B. Levenson is, without a doubt, one of the people who best knows His Holiness, the head of Tibetan Buddhism. She sheds light on his political role while delving into his past and personality."
