What does it mean to be transformed by the passion of Christ That's the question that Samuel Wells poses as he follows Jesus' encounters with six individuals during the last days of his life on Earth: Pontius Pilate, Barabbas, Joseph of Arimathea, Pilate's wife, Peter, and Mary Magdalene. In each of these encounters, Wells, through close readings of the Scripture, finds a different type of power revealed. The figures from Scripture come alive as their conflicts and doubts are displayed along with their discoveries as they met with the King of Kings. In this book, structured with one chapter for each week of Lent, Wells guides us toward a "transformed passion" as the true power of Christ's final days is revealed. The book offers questions at the end of each chapter for prayer and discussion. The Archbishop of Canterbury selected "Power and Passion" as his Lent book for 2007.

Author Bio

SAMUEL WELLS studied in Oxford, Edinburgh, and Durham, and then devoted the next fourteen years to parish ministry in the Anglican Church. He moved to North Carolina to become Dean of the Chapel at Duke University. He also serves as Research Professor of Christian Ethics at Duke Divinity School. He has written numerous books on theological ethics, including God's Companions: Reimagining Christian Ethics, Improvisation and the Drama of Christian Ethics, and Faithfulness and Fortitude: In Conversation with the Theological Ethics of Stanley Hauerwas.
