Description

In recent years, Old Testament scholars have come to see that the aesthetic and rhetorical richness of Hebrew poetry goes far beyond simple synonymous, antithetic, and synthetic parallelism. One aspect that has yet to receive sustained treatment is the poetic device known as direct discourse or quotationthe direct citation of a person's speech. Rolf A. Jacobson remedies this lack and makes a significant contribution to Old Testament studies by offering a sustained investigation into the function of direct discourse in the Hebrew Psalter. This leads to a greater understanding both of direct discourse and also of those psalms in which this poetic device occurs.

Reviews

"This book would be quite useful as a reference for rhetorical study of the Psalms, as well as of other texts that employ DD."The Bible and Critical Theory, Vol.1 No. 3, 2005
Review ~ International Review of Biblical Studies, vol 51 2004/05
"The study of Hebrew poetry has always included analysis of techniques such as parallelism, repetition, ellipsis, irony, hyperbole, hendiadys, etc. However, little if any attention was ever paid to direct address in poetry. With this study Jacobson steps into that lacuna. This very critical approach will advance both the study of Hebrew poetry generally and psalm study in particular." - The Bible Today, Nov/Dec 2005 * Bible Today, The *
