Distinguished Professor T Hirini Moko Mead (Ngti Awa,Ngti Twharetoa, Ngi Thoe, Ngti Manawa and Thourangi) isa writer, commentator, composer, artist and tribal leader. He is theauthor of over seventy books, papers and articles. He was foundationprofessor of Mori Studies at Te Herenga Waka Victoria Universityof Wellington and was an inspired founder of Te Whare Wnanga oAwanuirangi in Whakatne. A scholar of Mori language and culture, T Hirini was made a Distinguished Companion of the New ZealandOrder of Merit in 2006 and received a knighthood in 2009 for hisservices to Mori and to education.
