Reviews

This is a concise and tidy work that gives the teacher and librarian an introduction that clearly makes the case for the use of 'authentic' multicultural works. . . . If you want to expand your collection with multicultural titles and 'sell' them to your teachers and students this is a great way to put it together. Ms. York will make you look good. Recommended. * Library Media Connection *
As school populations across the United States continue to become more and more diverse, the need for the title, Booktalking Authentic Multicultural Literature, greatly increases. Sherry York, a strong advocate for the literature of ethnic populations, has written several other titles encouraging teachers and librarians to expose students to the wide variety of titles available, to increasea their cross-cultural understanding and to embrace students who are of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. York stresses the importance of presenting students with books that are authentic multicultural and diverse. For a book to be included in this work and to be considered authentic, the author must be a person of the culture for whic he or she has written. The 101 titles which comprise this title represent eighteen ethnic groups. The titles are appropriate for young adults and include memoirs, contemporary fiction, and history titles. For each title, York provides the books title, information about the author, publication information, genre, level, award notes, subject headings, read-alout excerpts, a sample booktalk, and related titles. York's work is recommended for librarians who wish to develop their authentic multicultural literature collections. It is also recommended for teachers who want to suggest good books to their students to increase their cross-cultural awareness. * Catholic Library World *
