Description

Education in South-East Asia is a comprehensive critical reference guide to education in South-East Asia. With chapters written by an international team of leading regional education experts, the book explores the education systems of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, the People's Democratic Republic of Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. The diverse range and forms of culture, religion and politics embedded in the region are exhibited in the distinctive education systems that inter-relate in one of the most integrated regions in the world. Including a comparative introduction to the issues facing education in the region as a whole this is an essential reference for researchers, scholars, international agencies and policy-makers at all levels.

Reviews

This excellent book on education in South-East Asia is a welcome addition to the literature on that region, not only because South-East Asia is growing and changing so fast but because it has often been neglected by educators in Europe and the north. Unlike many comparative and international education books this one does not follow any particular theme. Instead all the authors, who are authorities on the particular countries that they are writing about, identify what they perceive to be the main contemporary issues and problems facing their respective education systems. An admirable feature worth mentioning is that each chapter lists web sites where additional information and insights may be found. I highly recommend this book to students and scholars alike who have an interest in South-East Asia. * Keith Watson, Emeritus Professor of Comparative and International Education, University of Reading, UK *
With so much global interest in the role of education in economic growth in the dynamic nations of South-East Asia, this collection of up-to-date and stimulating country analyses will be an invaluable resource. * Michael Crossley, Professor of Comparative and International Education, University of Bristol, UK *
