Description

Every building administrator must be proactive to accomplish the demands of educating children for the twenty-first century. This entails making ethical decisions, building relationships, prioritizing school safety, and developing excellent communication skills that utilize data as a baseline. As a new administrator, it is very difficult to be an educational leader without having a predetermined map of what and where to lead. Preparing to Be Next in Line: A Guide to the Principalship provides that navigational tool so that every administrator can be successful.

Separating the theory from practical solutions, this text can be used as a resource for the novice administrator. The guide is based upon best practice and active research, and will provide new principals with both the theory and the practical aspects that will guarantee their successful tenures as principal.

Reviews

Preparing to Be Next in Line: A Guide to the Principalship is a practical and thoughtful approach to the principalship. Dr. Gorman's experience in a variety of settings provides a tremendous contextual lens through which to view the most public of education positions. He gives practical advice in the vernacular, but with enough theoretical background to ground decisions in research. The principalship is a lonely position and Gorman understands that and provides a shoulder to lean on, as well as strategies to deal with the myriad decisions that confront the principal on a daily basis. As I read this text, I thought back on my own early days in the position and thought "I wish I had that insight when I first dealt with that situation." As I work with aspiring principals I will point them to this text as a foundation from which to build as they begin to write their own professional narratives. -- Michael P. Short Ed.D, principal, Perrysburg High School, Perrysburg, Ohio
As a beginning administrator, Preparing to Be Next in Line was extremely valuable because of the unique blend of research theory and practical advice. While reading the book, I created an outline of helpful hints/suggestions to guide me through a productive and effective first year as a school principal. The recommendations and ideas delineated in the book are practical, applicable, and meaningful and can be implemented easily by any administrator. -- Chad Warnimont, principal, Monclova Primary Elementary School, Anthony Wayne Schools, Monclova, Ohio
