Description

Mentoring is one of the most positive and encouraging ways for schools to manage staff performance and leadership development. However, turning to outside bodies for training and expertise is generally expensive and time-consuming. Internally equipping staff with the skills to coach others is a fantastic way to overcome this boundary, while the transferability of these skills will further mentors professional development and help them realize their career ambitions. Drawing on her own experience as a school leader, Marcella McCarthy explains different theories of coaching and mentoring, examines research demonstrating their advantages in various situations, and guides teachers step-by-step through practical methods of coaching and mentoring that they could easily implement in their own school. There are example scenarios for teachers to tackle that will prepare them for a multitude of real-life situations. Moreover, Marcellas easy-to-understand concise methods of self-evaluation help ensure that mentors track their development and improve their approach as a mentor, ensuring other staff continue to receive the best possible guidance they can.
