Description

Recounts experiences of North American teachers in countries most commonly advertising overseas teaching positions, covering all aspects of teaching abroad. As a growing number of North American educators seek unique cultural and professional experiences teaching abroad, they need a comprehensive resource that addresses the many questions they face when approaching this decision. The present collection combines personal experiences of teachers of varying backgrounds, global placement, and teaching assignments, with practical resources such as listings of recruiting agencies, job fairs, country research tools, and salary guidelines. Growing out of people's need to share their story and relate to others joining the camaraderie of international teaching, this project has developed naturally, resisting the formalities of an academic or purely informative reporting. Lessons come from the many variables of teaching overseas--from culture shock, housing and transportation, schools and classrooms, to securing resources in a foreign land. It provides teachers with an authentic immediacy that only personal narratives can provide, answering questions and giving insights on a variety of global issues; while at the same time inspiring and entertaining the teacher-reader. Chapters discuss core curriculum and ESL instruction in a variety of contexts. Essays written in a blend of narrative and expository writing styles transport the reader to exotic locations, giving a firsthand experience of the challenge and victories encountered by the international teaching professional.
