Description

Why should children learn to write fluently What difference will it make to them and the opportunities available to them later on in life

The ability to communicate clearly, accurately and persuasively is a vital life skill. Deficiencies in motivation and thinking skills pervade the challenge of improving children's literacy levels.

'A Creative Approach to Teaching Writing' combines practical activities to help children aged 7-11 develop their writing skills, with insights into the attitude that experienced writers apply to their craft. The activities explore different working methods - such as how authors tap into and develop their creativity and how they deal with 'writer's block' - and are supported by strategies for thinking that will develop children's literacy and the way they use language to express their opinions in all subject areas.

Steve Bowkett, author, storyteller and education consultant, provides the key concepts and learning benefits of each strategy, along with a series of activities, extension ideas and useful links. Linked resources can be found on the series companion website.

Reviews

Packed with creative ideas to inspire writing, children are encouraged to develop a positive attitude towards writing, organise their ideas and learn a range of strategies to improve their writing. Some of the activities are short starters to stimulate ideas and others are much more detailed to add scope and breadth to childrens writing. This book is written in a tone which implies that writing is something to be enjoyed and savoured and we should relish the chance to get our children to think more creatively. -- Megan van Breugel
I found this refreshing at a time when the curriculum seems so restrictive. The layout is user-friendly, the ideas good and practical, and the style engaging. -- David Waugh * Primary PGCE programme director, Durham University *
This is an attractive, eye catching and east to access text. Well researched with good sources backing up the activities. Great for a busy teacher, to pick up some great ideas to develop planning. -- Nasreen Majid * Programme Director BA Ed Primary, University of Reading *
This clear and enthusiastic book offers a range of practical ideas to help children develop their writing skills. I especially like the way the book draws on attitudes experienced writers apply to their craft. -- Sarah Brew * www.parentsintouch.co.uk *
