Description

The curriculum is the driving force for excellent teaching and learning in any school. Yet, in primary schools, the curriculum is often led by class teachers who have little or no time to give to this vital part of their role. Subject leaders have the potential to rapidly improve the way a curriculum is taught, but the challenges they face can seem insurmountable.

The Practical Guide to Getting Subject Leaders to THRIVE! tackles these issues head-on with a framework rooted in educational research. Sebastian Olway's six-step THRIVE framework provides school leaders with a structure to support subject leaders and unlock their potential. The framework can also be used to guide an impactful series of professional development meetings, or to offer strategies, tips and resources for individual subject leaders.

Whether you're a primary school headteacher, a senior leader, an experienced subject leader or brand new to the role, this book will help your school to THRIVE!

Reviews

Sebastian Olway offers an insightful narrative as to the trials and tribulations, and the joys and highlights, likely to be experienced by subject leaders and those with whom they interact. This book challenges conventional thought and practice, and offers advice, techniques, strategies and ideas, all through the various lenses of headteacher, SLT, subject leader and teacher. There is a delightful synergy between the theoretical concepts discussed and the real-world application and contexts, delivered through the templates, activities and reflective elements within each chapter. This allows the reader a chance to immerse themselves and to THRIVE - the whole premise and the heart of the narrative throughout.

The beauty of this book is that it's written by a practitioner, for practitioners, with practitioners in mind throughout, and there's something for everyone, whether you're new to subject leadership or have been living and breathing the role for decades. Sebastian understands (and still lives) the pressures on classroom teachers, subject leaders and SLT members, and the book is structured in such a way that content is accessible and simple to implement. This is essential in the current context of teaching, where time is such a precious commodity. A must-read for those involved in the wonderful pursuit that is primary school teaching!

Structured in an accessible and informative manner, the book introduces the THRIVE model, a six-fold guide encompassing time, leadership strategies, relationship-building, investment, vision, and engagement. Each aspect of this structure is thoughtfully explored, providing leaders with the tools they need to support and empower their subject leaders effectively.

One of the strengths of this book is the wealth of practical content it offers. It includes invaluable resources like real-world examples, illuminating case studies, handy checklists, customisable templates and references to further reading materials.
