Description

In this edited book sponsored by the ATE Diversity Committee, we invited teacher educators to engage in critical dialogue and reflection around theories, issues, complexities, and challenges of antiracist teacher education and to exchange critical ideas and theory/research-informed practices for preparing antiracist teachers. The audience for this book are teacher educators in all disciplinary areas and at all levels. It is also intended for administrators and policy makers leading teacher education programs at national or state levels. In light of the racial injustice and tension the country has witnessed and experienced recently, achieving racial justice is at the front and center of numerous conversations in schools, the workplace, and communities around the country. There is an urgent need for teacher educators to support the cause. This book is a direct response to such a call and is timely and much needed.

Reviews

Gilda Martinez-Alba, Luis Javier Penton Herrera and Afra Hersis book Antiracism in Teacher Education: Theory and Practice could not be more welcome! As a professional association focused on improving teacher education, the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) values and needs our membership to help critically examine and address antiracist education in educator preparation. For teacher educators, administrators, and policymakers with interest in achieving racial and social justice in education, this book offers the theoretical framework as well as research-informed tools, lessons, and models anyone can use. This edited volume is a great example of how our community of practice can use our voice and intellectual talent to offer resources for our work with preservice and inservice teachers. -- Alisa Chapman, Executive Director for the Association of Teacher Educators
This book is a much-needed collection for teachers and teacher educators in need of resources to develop their knowledge base about antiracist principles and practices in teacher education. The authors provide different perspectives about issues related to antiracism with a special focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice as well as the development of critical orientations in teacher education contexts. This is a wonderful contribution to education and beyond. -- Luciana C. de Oliveira, PhD, Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies, School of Education, Virginia Commonwealth University
