The decade of the 1980s marked a crucial turning point in Turkey's socio-economic structure and polity. At the heart of the socio-economic transformation lay the January 24, 1980, economic austerity package and the September 12, 1980, coup d'etat, both of which altered not only the Turkish economy and societal structure but the political system and external relations as well. The meanings of right and left, modernity and backwardness, and of Turkishness were completely revised. This book shows the nature of this socio-economic and political transformation and assesses the success and failure of relevant policies as the country prepares to enter the 21st century.
.,."a welcome addition to the literature concerned with the contemporary Turkish republic. Its particular significance lies in its authorship. This is a book prepared by ten scholars of modern Turkey, all Turkish nationals, eight currently teaching in that country's institutions of higher learning. Moreover, these scholars represent some of the best of Turkish scholarship in a range of disciplines covering political science, sociology, economics, and international relations. For those of us long habituated to reading the works of American and expatriate scholars, this volume is a refreshing and exciting production. The contributors to this book combine high standards of academic rigor with personal insight that can only derive from day-to-day immersion in Turkey's political and socioeconomic life. An important contribution to our understanding and should appeal to an audience well beyond the specialist in Turkish affairs."-Journal of Developing Areas
