There are two well-known approaches to the study of international relations: Realism and Idealism. This book explores the writings of Inis L. Claude, Jr., a preeminent scholar on international relations, to define a third approach. Pragmatic liberalism, an "in-between" approach, argues that a liberal world order can be sustained and promoted by the pragmatic application of liberal principles. It rejects both the over-pessimism of Realism and the over-optimism of Idealism while refusing to maintain that the anarchic nature of the international system is unchangeable or even that we can change it overnight. However, it is possible to eventually improve the international system. This melioristic approach to world order and international relations can be explained through the sophisticated writings of Inis L. Claude, Jr., who has remained a celebrated scholar and an example to students of international relations everywhere for over a half century.
Inis L. Claude, Jr., is one of the twentieth century's most interesting and important scholars of international relations and organization. A wide-ranging, nuanced, and discerning thinker, Claude remains worthy of continued attention, as Nejat Dogan compellingly argues in his important book. Dr. Dogan's thoughtful exploration of Claude and his 'pragmatic liberalism' constitute a valuable source for contemporary scholars and policy-makers. -- Robert J. Beck, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
An unyielding voice of careful reason and thought in a field of study typically fraught with conflict and dissension, Nejat Dogan is well-known as a leading scholar of international relations and world order. As Editor-in-Chief of the Comparative Civilizations Review, I am happy to draw scholarly attention to this book for its valuable insights. I call upon experts in international relations here and abroad to examine the ideas presented in this new work, as they help illuminate significant intellectual ground. -- Joseph Drew, Ph.D., Northern Virginia Center, University of Virginia
Given the current events in world politics, a fresh look at theories has been needed in the study of international relations for some time. Dr. Dogan offers a new approach beyond Realism and Idealism. This book will be helpful to students, scholars, and policymakers alike. -- McCall Carter, JD, president, Ashburn Institute
