Description

The dynamic and complex system of European Union policymaking is analysed in this new edition of a much-praised textbook. It offers the most integrated understanding of EU policy available. Major approaches to policymaking including intergovernmentalism, neofunctionalism, supranationalism and critical theory are presented and supplemented with the authors own theoretical model, federal integration, to create a comprehensive evaluation of the EUs interests and actors in key policy domains. The text covers the EUs main policy areas including those on the single market, Economic and Monetary Union, foreign policy, migration and border control, social and regional policies, and the budget locating them in this wider theoretical framework. As such, it is the key introduction to the subject for students of European Politics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. New to this Edition: - Each chapter rewritten, many extensively, throughout - New chapters on migration and border control, competition policy, and social and cohesion policies. - New illustrative material and many new examples - Each chapter now includes a Guide to Further Reading Accompanying online resources for this title can be found at bloomsburyonlineresources.com/policies-and-policy-processes-of-the-european-union. Reviews

Laurie Buonanno and Neill Nugents much-awaited second edition is both highly accessible and informative, providing a great deal of clarity to the often complex world that is the EUs policy process. Read this book and learn from two of the most knowledgeable experts on the intricacies of both the theoretical and practical aspects of policy-making. * Michael J. Geary, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway *
Theres no better book on how the European Union makes policy than this one. Focused on the EU policy process with in-depth chapters covering key policy areas, the book offers a perfect mix of analysis and up-to-date empirics presented in an accessible style. If theres one book to buy this year on the EUs intricate policy process, this is the one. * Mark Rhinard, Stockholm University, Sweden *
This superb guide to EU policy and policymaking will provide students with the concepts and theoretical insights necessary to make sense of the actors and institutions that shape each stage of the EU policy process. Individual policy chapters, from classics like agriculture to contemporary challenges like migration, illuminate the major issues and latest developments. This will be an excellent textbook for university students in introductory or intermediate courses on the subject, graduate or undergraduate. - Brendan Carroll, Leiden University, the Netherlands * Brendan Carroll, Leiden University, the Netherlands *
Unlike other EU texts, this cogent, well-organized textbook provides a unique focus on EU policies and processes, and is coupled with a discussion of not only traditional integration theories, but also uniquely grounded in a combination of federalism and economic integration theory. The book is a refreshing departure from other EU textbooks, and provides clarity to the otherwise very complex nature of policymaking in the EU. The policy issues covered are very timely and rich with historical and empirical details, making it a must have resource for students and educators of the EU. * Carolyn M. Dudek, Hofstra University, USA *
This revised textbook will be of great use to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is significantly wide-ranging, while still offering an impressive level of detail and theoretical sophistication. The new edition reflects evolving debates and trends within EU studies, including its increasing pluralism. * Muireann ODwyer, University of St. Andrews, UK *
Offering expert knowledge of EU policies and processes and rigorous engagement with mainstream and critical theories, this book is a valuable resource for those seeking to understand and learn from Europes extraordinary experiment in international governance. * Dermot Hodson, University of London, UK *
