This text combines a number of different approaches to the subject, setting Nazi anti-semitism in the context of German history from the later-19th century, the stresses of Germany's modernization, Hitler's personal role and the ways in which he interacted with the wider Nazi party and state, the anti-semitism of German society, and the varied experiences and actions of the Jews themselves. Throughout, the text aims to never lose sight of the experience of individuals in its discussion of Nazi policies and the terrible statistics and technological and administrative sophistication of the Final Solution.
Saul Friedlander was born in Prague in 1932. He fled to France where he survived the war in hiding. He arrived in Israel in 1948 and took part in the Israeli War of Independence.
