Description

This is the story of a former Jesuit priest who travelled to Ireland in order to better understand the IRA, its widespread support among Irish Catholics, and the country's continuing civil unrest. Author Dennis McFerran, an American, made many key contacts in Northern Ireland, enabling him to gain unprecedented access to republican groups. He met with members of the Orange Lodge and the heavily armed Royal Ulster Constabulary, had tea with leaders of Sinn Fein, and particpated in the annual internment March on the streets of Belfast. It provides a case history of the conflict and goes beyond the propaganda on both sides to better understand the causes of today's violence and to see what would be necessary to end it.

Reviews

Although this book deals with the IRA, it is also largely about the author finding his Irishness in middle age. McFerran...takes a look at the 'Irish situation' through the eyes of a neophyte and comes away both proud and sometimes appalled at the violence that has marked Ireland since the Uprising of 1798.... A recommended overview for budding Celtophiles.-Publishers Weekly
